Mamdani’s Plan for Government-Run Grocery Stores Will Put Bodegas Out of Business and Destroy Immigrant Livelihoods

Mamdani has no experience running a city — let alone a grocery store. His proposal to replace New York’s corner stores with government-run markets is already sparking outrage from the very people who serve this city: the thousands of immigrant-run bodegas that are the lifeblood of our neighborhoods. “A foolish idea,” says Fernando Mateo of the United Bodegas of America. “These aren’t just stores — they’re community centers run by immigrants who came here to work hard and build a life.” Mamdani’s plan would gut these small businesses and replace them with city-run markets staffed by bureaucrats. We’ve seen this movie before — and it flops every time. From Kansas City to Salt Lake City to even NYC itself a generation ago, city-run grocery stores have failed due to poor planning, empty shelves, mismanagement, and bureaucratic and food rot. Real estate leaders are warning that Mamdani’s agenda could trigger a mass exodus from the city. As supermarket owner John Catsimatidis bluntly put it: “We may consider closing our supermarkets and selling the business.” New Yorkers don’t need socialist experiments that have failed whenever they are tried — they need leadership that respects the people who already make the city work.
